RS Review: Edge of Midnight (The Chasing Evil Trilogy) [Mass Market Paperback]

I’ve finished “Edge of Midnight” the 3rd book in her Midnight trilogy by Leslie Tentler.

Product Description

The writer becomes the story when crime reporter Mia Hale is discovered on a Jacksonville beach — bloodied and disoriented, but alive. She remembers nothing, but her wounds bear the signature of a sadistic serial killer. After years lying dormant, The Collector has resumed his grim hobby: abducting women and taking gruesome souvenirs before dumping their bodies. But none of his victims has ever escaped — and he wants Mia back, more than he ever wanted any of the others.

FBI agent Eric MacFarlane has pursued The Collector for a long time. The case runs deep in his veins, bordering on obsession … and Mia holds the key. She’ll risk everything to recover her memory and bring the madman to justice, and Eric swears to protect this fierce, fragile survivor. But The Collector will not be denied. In his mind, he knows just how their story ends.

About the Author

Leslie Tentler worked in PR before writing fiction. Her first manuscript won multiple RWA chapter contest awards, including the prestigious Maggie Award of Excellence. Leslie is a native of Kingsport, TN. Growing up, she was an avid reader, first of Nancy Drew novels and then surreptitiously devouring her mother’s historical romances at probably too young an age. Her reading interests later moved to dark, contemporary romantic thrillers, which she writes today. She lives in Atlanta.

My Review:

FBI agent Eric Macfarlane is on an official hunt for “The Collector” which has turned personal because he killed his ex-wife.

When crime writer Mia Hale is found blooded, disoriented and showing signs of “The Collector’s signature Eric is determined to end his reign of terror.  Mia doesn’t remember anything about the sadistic killer who left her drugged and tortured to die on the beach.  She agrees to help Eric by taking a experimental memory enhancement treatment which might help her remember what happened.  It does help but it also brings up a memory that Mia has forgotten when she was a child.  She has met the sadistic killer in her childhood.

Mia is the killer’s final and prized possession and taunts Eric with the knowledge that he failed to save his wife.

Edge of Midnight was a thrilling romantic suspense with a very clever and psychotic killer, emotionally damaged FBI agent and a crime writer who becomes the story.  The characters were well written, was fast paced with non stop action from start to finish and a believable sexual tension attraction.

RS Review: Sleepwalker [Hardcover]

I’ve finished “Sleepwalker” by Karen Robards.

Product Description

It’s not that Micayla Lange is afraid of the clinking she hears coming from the first floor of the empty McMansion she’s housesitting for her uncle Nicco. She’s a cop, after all. It’s just that finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her was enough drama for one night. Now she’s alone on New Year’s Eve, wearing flannel pajamas and wielding a Glock 22 as she zeroes in on the unmistakable source of the sound: Uncle Nicco’s private office. Jason Davis steals things for a living, so unexpected developments are a natural part of the job. Getting caught red-handed by a hot, pigtail-sporting police officer in what is supposed to be a gangster’s deserted house is just one more twist in the game. Kind of like finding incriminating photos in Nicco Marino’s safe, only to discover the cop — and the security cameras — have gotten a real good look at his face. Unfortunately for Mick, she also got a good look at the damned pictures. Her “uncle” might love her like family, but if he knows she’s seen evidence that implicates him in the murder of a city councilman, she doesn’t like her chances. Which is why she’s having a hard time reconciling her professional instincts with what she is rapidly concluding is an inescapable fact: She’s about to help a criminal get away with a suitcase full of stolen money. And she’s going with him. Mick and Jason’s race for their lives hurtles them through the dangerous Michigan wilderness on speedboat and snowmobile. As their adventure heats up and their enemies close in, Mick is torn between her duty to the force and the combustible passion engulfing her and her unlikely partner in crime. She’ll have to turn Jason in sooner or later . if they survive. But will they ever get a second chance at love?

My Review:

Micayla Lange affectionally known as Mick witnessed the brutal murder of her mother right in front of her eyes when she was a kid.  She has overcome her tragedy and has a law enforcement career as a police officer for the Detroit Police Department.

She has found out her homicide investigator boyfriend Nick Nick Horacki has been cheating on her.  As a result she has come to her best friend’s father Uncle Nikko Martino house a day earlier to house sit.

When she wakes up from a sleepwalking nightmare which she relives the death of her mother she interrupts a couple of burglars in the middle of robbing Uncle Nikko’s safe.  She doesn’t hesitate to jump into action and gets in a fight with one buglar (she gets the upper hand) but the other points a gun at her and tells her stop.  Jason Davis knew that when he picked robbing criminals he knew their would be risks but he didn’t expect to find a Hot Officer.  During their struggle some pictures fall to the ground which incriminate her Uncle Nicco of killing Edward Lightfoot and his family.

Then Uncle Nicco’s security team arrives and suddenly Micayla becomes his accomplice and wants to help him which surprises both of them.  Now both of them are on the run for their lives.

This book I found kind of slow at the beginning but become fast paced once Micayla and Jason were on the run from Uncle Nicco’s henchmen.  The sexual tension between Micayla and Jason was really hot but forbidden.  It has twists and turns with a red herring near the end.
